Urge Utility Companies to Make Better Energy Choices
For years, utility companies have relied on dirty fossil fuels to power our lives. They often even import vast quantities of coal—while neglecting local, home-grown, renewable energy resources and energy efficiency opportunities. They’re polluting our air, sending our money out of state, buying dirty coal, and shipping our clean energy resources overseas. It doesn’t have to be that way.
Please email the largest utility company in your state to find out where your power comes from (Note that in some cases, you will be contacting the parent company of your state electric utility). Ask for their current energy mix and plans for increasing investments in clean, renewable sources of electricity and energy efficiency. The choices the largest utility companies make have the most significant impact in your state and greatest potential to initiate industry-wide shifts in practice.
Utility companies have a lot of say in how our energy dollars are spent—but they’re not the only ones who have the power to transform the U.S. energy system to one that is cleaner and more sustainable. In the coming months we’ll be asking you to weigh in on the state and national energy policies that can also help shape these decisions. Stay tuned. And please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to let us know how your state’s largest utility responds!
